5 Things to Do on a Girls Trip to Charleston

Charleston, a lovely city on the South Carolina coast, has a mix of Southern charm, a rich past, and a lively culture. It's the perfect destination for a girls trip, with its cobblestone streets, pastel-colored houses, and abundance of boutiques, restaurants, and historic attractions.

Charleston, SC

Walking through the Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, is like going back in time. You can visit the Old City Market, where artisans have been selling their wares for over 200 years, or stroll along the Battery, a peaceful stretch of land overlooking the harbor with views of the Ashley and Cooper rivers. I always enjoy exploring the charming neighborhood of South of Broad, where magnificent mansions like the Thomas Heyward House and the Aiken-Rhett House stand as evidence of the city's rich past.

One of my absolute favourite things about Charleston is that as the sun sets over the harbor, Charleston transforms into a magical haven. You can stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the lively atmosphere of Waterfront Park.

Here are five things to do on a girls trip to Charleston:

1. Indulge in Southern Cuisine

Charleston's culinary scene is a must-experience for any visitor. From traditional Lowcountry fare to inventive New Southern cuisine, there's something to satisfy every palate. Indulge in crispy fried chicken, buttery biscuits, freshly caught seafood, and decadent desserts. My favorite local specialities are she-crab soup and benne wafers. Yummy!

2. Explore the Historic District

Wander through the picturesque streets of Charleston's historic district, admiring the antebellum architecture, lush gardens, and charming courtyards. Take a leisurely stroll along Rainbow Row, where houses are painted in a vibrant palette of colors. Visit iconic landmarks like Battery Park, The Battery, and the Old City Market. Don’t forget to make many photo stops along the way.

3. Immerse in History and Culture

Delve into Charleston's rich history by visiting its many museums and plantations. Explore the Edmondston-Alston House, a preserved antebellum mansion, and learn about the city's role in the slave trade. Take a guided tour of the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, or venture to Middleton Place, a sprawling plantation with manicured gardens and a historic house.

4. Embrace the Arts and Crafts Scene

Charleston is a haven for art enthusiasts and craft lovers! I always love to browse the galleries and boutiques along King Street, where you'll find unique artwork, handcrafted jewellery, and locally made souvenirs. If you are an art lover you will enjoy a visit to the Gibbes Museum of Art, home to an impressive collection of Southern art.

One of the things I always try to do in Charleston is also attend a performance at the Dock Street Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in the United States.

5. Paddle a rowboat through the swamp at Cypress Gardens

Cypress Gardens is a beautiful swamp garden with giant cypress trees offering boat tours. Immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of the Lowcountry by embarking on a serene rowboat adventure through the cypress swamps of Cypress Gardens. Glide effortlessly through the dark, still waters, enveloped by the lush greenery of towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife that call this swamp home, such as alligators basking in the sun, turtles perched on logs, and white ibis soaring overhead.

You might recognise the location from the romantic boat scene in Nicholas Sparks’ romance, The Notebook.

I hope this blog post has given you some ideas for your next girls trip to Charleston. Remember, Charleston is a city that's best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, so savor the Southern charm, indulge in the culinary delights, and create lasting memories with your girlfriends.
